Wizard of Wall Street
The "Wizard of Wall Street" project is an activity that takes place over the course of 5-weeks and allows students to interact with the stock market. Working as individuals, students are given $10,000 to spend in the stock market. Students are directed to buy at least 5 different stocks and 2 commodity stocks to simulate a diversified stock portfolio. Once stocks are purchased students will log their portfolio's progress once a week to determine if they have made a profit, or lost. On the 5th week students sell their stocks and determine how well they played the stock market. Ultimately, students will analyze their experience in a professional report.
Rational for Project
Chapters 7, 10, & 11 address personal finance and market structures. The "Wizard of Wall Street" project touches on all concepts. This unit begins by introducing students to different types of businesses, their market structures, and their market power. This gives students background information on businesses and gets them thinking about the unit. As the unit builds, we begin to discuss personal finance and making economically literate decisions. Finally, we discuss how to invest in low risk accounts, houses, and the stock market. This project requires students to understand all components of the unit before completing the assignment, therefore it is used as part of a summative assessment for the unit.
Stock PowerPoint with Stock Buying Directions
HandoutsStudents receive several handouts to guide them in completing the project. These handouts include, the instructions, the rubric, and the stock logging sheet. Students will be able to ask questions at any point of the activity. Logging sheets are checked every log day.
